The National Land Commission (NLC) has earmarked 920 parcels of land for two major infrastructure development projects and consequently reached out to the owners to release them to the state.
NLC Chairperson Gerishom Otachi, vide Gazette Notice No 7788 explained that the land would be used for the Construction of the Mombasa Gate Bridge in Mombasa County.
Otachi noted that the request was on behalf of the Kenya National Highway Commission (KeNHA) and that the 62 affected landowners would be compensated.
"In pursuance of sections 112 and 162 (2) of the Land Act, 2012, Part VIII and further to Gazette Notice Nos. 12299 of 2021 and15192 of 2022, the National Land Commission on behalf of Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) gives notice that the Inquiry to hear claims to compensation for interested parties in the land required for the construction of the Mombasa Gate Bridge Project in Mombasa County shall be held on the dates and venues shown below," the notice read in part.
NLC made adjustments to an initial list of parcels of land selected for the project and published those which had been deleted from the list.
The Mombasa Gate Bridge is an elevated highway that will rise above the Indian Ocean, connecting Mombasa Island and the South Coast. It will be the largest in Africa.
At an estimated budget of Ksh47 billion, the roadway will be constructed through a joint partnership between the Kenyan and Japanese governments and is expected to reduce travel time by 50 per cent.
Besides the 62 landowners, another group of landlords seeking compensation in regard to the construction have been given dates to present their claims to the commission. The hearings shall be ongoing in different locations between July 11 and July 20.
The Commission further requested land for the construction of a power transmission line that will stretch up to 82.5 kilometres cutting across multiple parcels of land in Kilifi County.
Notably, this new transmission line will affect 858 landowners located in the earmarked area.
"This notice serves to inform the listed landowners of the plan to construct an electricity transmission line, a public project, consisting of the construction of towers and conductors overlying their land.
"Details of compensation will be communicated to the affected individual landowners. Any representations or objections regarding the wayleave should be made to the National Land Commission," the notice read in part.
At the helm of the second project is the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO).
