The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on Thursday, June 27 deployed armoured vehicles in specific parts of Nairobi, particularly roads leading to State House in anticipation of protests.
A video seen by Kenyans.co.ke depicted a convoy of military vehicles along Lang'ata Road believed to have been deployed from the Lang'ata Barracks.
These included; three trucks and four land cruisers ferrying heavily armed KDF officers. The military vehicles were dispatched to Nyayo Stadium.
Some of the sophisticated automobiles also included an armoured troop carrier, three Humvees, one light utility vehicle, two Land Cruisers and three lorries.
Additionally, some KDF soldiers were seen surrounding Parliament manning the building and its environs following Tuesday's incident where several Kenyans breached police barricades to storm the chambers.
The vehicles seen in Nairobi sparked debate among Kenyans who questioned the deployment of the soldiers when Kenyans were staging peaceful protests.
KDF soldiers have been deployed in Nairobi as the government moves to shore up security, acting on planned demonstrations after a section of Kenyans threatened to march to State House to protest despite President William Ruto withdrawing the Finance Bill, 2024.
On Tuesday, Defence Cabinet Secretary announced the deployment of the soldiers after the mayhem witnessed earlier in the day. One day later, Parliament approved the deployment despite criticism from various quarters.
A petition was also filed by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) questioning the legality of KDF deployment to restore peace in the country following the unrest caused by the demonstrations.
The High Court is today expected to rule on the legality of the deployment of KDF soldiers to quell protests.
In the petition, LSK President Faith Odhiambo had asked the High Court to suspend the decision by CS Duale until the case is heard and determined.
The society argued that Kenya was yet to reach the threshold necessitating deployment of the soldiers.
