The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has clarified the decision to approve John Chebochok as a candidate amid allegations questioning his suitability to run for the Kenya Tea Development Agency zonal director Tegat/Toror Tea Factory.
In a statement issued by IEBC Secretary Marjan Hussein Marjan, the Commission clarified that Chebochok met all the required qualifications and that no formal complaints were lodged against him or his character.
"John Chebochok presented a valid certificate of good conduct, and therefore, qualified as a person of good standing in terms of the provisions of the Article of Association of Tegat/Toror Tea Factory Company," Marjan stated.
Chebochok was implicated in a sexual exploitation investigative report by BBC Eye on Africa that placed him at the centre of the vice.
Notably, Chebochok was elected as a Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) zonal director in Kericho County on Friday.
Despite queries over his candidature from several organisations and human rights groups, he was thrust into an influential leadership position in the tea sector.
Chebochok floored Philip Tonui and Serem in the election presided over by IEBC.
Marjan further elaborated on the vetting process, noting that there were no formal objections raised against Chebochok’s candidature.
"There was no formal record of any complaint raised against the candidature of John Chebochok during the prescribed period," he emphasized.
According to the electoral body, the absence of complaints reinforces the IEBC's position that Chebochok’s candidacy was legitimate and compliant with all relevant regulations.
The defence of Chebochok comes in response to recent criticisms and unverified claims circulating in the media and public forums.
These allegations suggested that Chebochok was not fit for the position due to purported past misconduct and unfair treatment of his juniors.
