The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) on Wednesday summoned Dadaab MP Farah Maalim to facilitate investigations into his controversial remarks on the recent protests.

In the summon, the MP was instructed to present himself to the NCIC offices on Thursday at 11:00 A.M  failure to which he would be arrested.

In the video which has since gone viral, the legislator was heard allegedly stating that if he were the Kenyan President he would have clamped down on demonstrators.

Following the comments, the NCIC stated, “The Commission is investigating utterances made by the MP in Somali language, on the Gen Z demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024."

“Hon. Farah Maalim is required to appear before the Commission to assist with the aforementioned ongoing investigations. Failure to appear in person at the said place, date, and time, is an offence as provided under Section 63 (c) as read with Section 63 (e) of the NCI Act, read the statement in part.”

The NCIC further noted that the utterances were likely geared to incite feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence or discrimination.

Consequently, in the commission's view, this would  affect the harmonious coexistence between groups of different political affiliations in Kenya, which is the Commission's mandate.

However, despite the NCIC‘s summon, the legislator had previously claimed that the video was doctored and that the comments were not his original remarks.

Despite the MP's assertions that the viral video was engineered to paint him in bad light, the legislator is yet to provide tangible evidence that he did not explicity utter the words as depicted in the video in question.

Additionally, the NCIC also summoned another individual, named Merimet for inciteful comments which the elder made during a past unspecified event.

The elder allegedly made comments which proclaimed hate against several communities residing in Nakuru County.

Merimet, will also be required to report to the Commission's headquarters in Nairobi on Thursday at 11:00 A.M to facilitate investigations into the matter.
