Attorney General Justin Muturi on Thursday, called out the Standard Newspaper for stating that President William Ruto does not listen to his counsel.
Muturi accused the media house of falsely attributing the remarks to him.
The AG further asked the Standard Newspaper to retract the story and always uphold accuracy when publishing.
“I am deeply concerned by an article published by The Standard Newspaper on July 11, 2024, that quotes statements falsely attributed to me,” he stated.
“As a former lawmaker and former speaker of the National Assembly, I uphold the highest standards of integrity and transparency. The misquotations in the article are misleading to the Kenyan public and undermine these principles.”
AG Muturi remarked that he was actively pursuing legal channels to have The Standard retract these statements and correct the public record.
While revealing that he would sue The Standard, Muturi urged media houses to be aware of their responsibility in their reporting to ensure that the truth is upheld.
In the now-disputed headline, AG Muturi was quoted by the newspaper as remarking he should not be accused of misadvising the President.
"In a bold step, Attorney General Justin Muturi has come out to say the President does not consult him on a number of key decisions, in spite of being the chief legal advisor, on various issues and that is why the government has been a butt of jokes in corridors of justice," the newspaper's front page read in part.
Attributing quotes from the Attorney General, The Standard Newspaper, stated that Muturi had lamented not being consulted about the deployment of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to suppress protests.
Muturi was further quoted as stating that he had not advised the government on police conduct during protests as well as President William Ruto's decision to order a public debt audit.
In June 2023, President William Ruto was accused by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) of ignoring AG Muturi's advice against including three advisors and a party secretary general from attending Cabinet meetings.
