On Saturday, August 17, ODM Deputy Party Leader and Kisii Governor Simba Arati made a resolute declaration that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) would field a candidate against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Arati’s comments emphasised the continued loyalty of the Nyanza Region to ODM leader Raila Odinga and underscored the party’s determination to challenge Ruto’s presidency.
The governor, while addressing the crowd during a political rally in Oyugis town, Homa Bay County, urged Raila Odinga to remain vigilant as he embarks on his new role within the African Union.
He called on Raila to return to the political arena a few months before his tenure ends, promising that ODM would stand firmly against Ruto in the 2027 elections.
"As he (Raila Odinga) goes for the AU job, we are asking Raila Odinga to be weary of his surroundings. We will ask that a few months to the end of your tenure, comeback and we will ensure that in 2027. We are against Ruto on the ballot," Arati stated.
The Kisii Governor also reaffirmed the unwavering support of the Nyanza Region for Raila Odinga, calling on other regions, particularly Mombasa, to maintain their allegiance to the ODM leader.
"As Nyanza region, we shall stand with Raila Odinga and I urge the people of Mombasa to hold the fort for Raila Odinga," Arati urged.
In a pointed remark, Arati reminded the audience of President Ruto's past association with ODM, implying that Ruto’s political trajectory was deeply intertwined with the party.
He humorously suggested that Ruto could return to ODM, where Arati, as the Deputy Party Leader, would personally review his credentials.
"Ruto was in ODM. I have told him to come and as the ODM deputy party, I will look at his papers and see where he fits," Arati remarked.
Notably, the Kisii governor insisted that the ODM party was not in any form of a coalition with the Kenya Kwanza government led by President William Ruto.
The outspoken leader explained that the opposition party had just donated the best minds to help resuscitate Ruto’s failed government.
