Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim has launched a crackdown against employment agencies promising to secure employment for Kenyans abroad.
In a statement on Sunday, the Governor vowed to revoke licenses held by some of the agencies if found duping the applicants.
His concern came following a media exposé that showed more than 300 people had lost their money, estimated to run into millions, after being promised jobs in Canada.
"Effective immediately, my administration, in collaboration with relevant authorities, will launch a rigorous crackdown on these fraudulent operations," he stated.
"We will revoke the operating licenses of any agency found to be in violation of regulations within our county."
Chelilim further promised to restore trust into Eldoret, which was officially conferred city status on Thursday last week.
As a vibrant, progressive, and cosmopolitan city, Eldoret is home to people from all walks of life and is ever ready to welcome investors and visitors alike. Our county stands as a beacon of growth, opportunity, and innovation."
"We empathise with the parents and students affected by these scams. It is intolerable that our citizens are being preyed upon by unscrupulous individuals and agencies," he empathised with the parents.
Citizen TV on Saturday exposed an agency for defrauding 300 individuals by promising to secure them jobs in Canada. The company reportedly collected between Ksh300,000 and Ksh350,000 from two brothers.
Separately, two other victims parted with Ksh600,000 and Ksh700,000.
