Tens of tourists were among hundreds of motorists who were on Tuesday morning caught up in a huge traffic snarl-up along the Nakuru-Narok Highway.
The motorists reportedly found themselves trapped in the traffic jam after a section of Olokurto ward residents resorted to staging demonstrations along the ever-busy stretch.
According to witnesses, the residents staged demonstrations to protest against the poor state of roads within the area.
During their demonstrations, the residents called on the area Member of Parliament, Agnes Mantaine to intervene and help in the construction of the Lengetia-Olpusimoru Road.
In the videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke, a fleet of vehicles including those ferrying tens of tourists could be spotted lined up along the highway.
The situation worsened gradually as the residents intensified their demonstration, forcing some of the motorists to seek alternative routes.
Some passengers resorted to alighting from their vehicles to trek as the traffic jam which affected both lanes of the road intensified.
It is not the first time that motorists plying the route have faced a similar challenge, in April this year, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) was forced to close the section of the road after debris blocked the highway.
In a statement, the roads agency revealed that the road had been rendered impassable after floods deposited debris on the highway.
KeNHA further disclosed that the highway had been affected approximately 1km from Mai Mahiu town towards Suswa and Narok areas.
The Authority similarly noted that the closures were caused by heavy blockages with efforts to clear the roads already kicked off.
"Heavy rains in the catchment areas of Kinale and Kijabe have led water courses to experience an upsurge which has led to the washing away of debris and several houses," read the statement by KeNHA.
"These areas are heavily affected, with road blockages reported. Currently, traffic is at a standstill around Mai Mahiu centre."
