Raila Odinga has officially unveiled his academic and professional credentials as he launches his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson post.

In a strategic move to garner support across the continent, Odinga outlined a manifesto that reflects his long-standing commitment to Pan-Africanism, economic transformation, and continental unity.

His candidacy, now set to be officially endorsed by President William Ruto next week, positions him as a formidable contender for one of Africa's most influential roles.

Odinga holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Production Technology from Magdeburg Technical School and Otto-Von-Guericke University in Germany, highlighting his strong foundation in technical disciplines.

Additionally, his expertise is broadened by certificates in Senior Management from the Kenya Institute of Management, Standardization and Quality Control from the University of Denver in the US, as well as Establishment of Natural Physical Standards from the National Bureau of Standards & Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland, US, and Standards Specification Writing from the British Standards Institution (BSI Group).

Beyond his academic prowess, Odinga's contributions to thought leadership are notable. He authored The Quest for Nationhood: Roadmap to Our Future* (2017) and Raila Odinga: The Flame of Freedom (2013), both of which offer deep insights into his vision for Kenya and Africa at large. His publications are a testament to his intellectual capacity and his commitment to articulating a transformative vision for the continent.

Odinga’s career has also earned him several honorary awards. Notably, he received the Greater Good Award from Mizani Africa in 2021, a Doctor of Sciences (Honoris Causa) from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science & Technology in 2018, and the BEFFTA Award for Global Leadership in the same year. His recognition extends beyond Kenya, with accolades such as the Golden Jubilee Award presented by the President of the Republic of Kenya in 2013 and a Doctorate of Leadership in Social Development (Honoris Causa) from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Malaysia.

The former Prime Minister’s manifesto for the AUC Chairperson role is built on six core pillars: Economic Transformation, Enhancing Intra-African Trade, Financial Independence, Gender Equity and Equality, Agricultural Transformation, Climate Action, and Continental Integration. Odinga's emphasis on peace and security stands out as a cornerstone of his vision.

He articulates a clear strategy to address the root causes of instability across Africa, aiming to create a conducive environment for development and prosperity.

Odinga's Pan-Africanist credentials he argues are “unrivalled”, with his political philosophy deeply intertwined with a commitment to harnessing Africa’s vast resources for the continent's collective benefit. His leadership style is described as visionary and action-oriented, qualities that have been consistently demonstrated through his roles in Kenya and across Africa.

As Prime Minister, Odinga was instrumental in introducing performance contracting in government, a move that significantly improved accountability and financial management in public service delivery.
