Activist and journalist Hanifa Adan on Thursday revealed that she received a handsome contribution from Kenyans after her commendable efforts in accounting for every cent of the Ksh 31 million raised by Kenyans to facilitate the medical treatment of demonstrators injured during anti-finance bill protests.

Through a post , the activist revealed she received more than Ksh 130,000 from Kenyans, who extended the gesture to appreciate her for her hard work and integrity.

"I’ve so far received 130K omg the 500s were so many I didn’t think it would top up like that thank you so much, guys," she wrote.

At the height of the so-called 'Gen Z protests' between June and July, Hanifa spearheaded a campaign to pool money to go towards helping police brutality victims injured in the protests.

The young journalist led Kenyans in a fundraiser through the M-Changa platform and managed to raise Ksh 31,663,580.

Raising such hefty amounts from a fundraiser typically raises questions of accountability, but Hanifa took it upon herself to account for the funds by sharing a comprehensive audit report detailing how every shilling was spent.

According to Hanifa, the money went towards helping 208 families and persons, who received support for a total of Sh30,296,574.

The report observes that Ksh 10,126,963 was directed towards clearing the medical bills of 95 individuals, who sustained serious injuries during the protests.

A further 2,081,930 was used to cater for victims who suffered permanent injuries, while bereaved families were allocated 10,320,000.

A total of 10 hospitals received the funds to offset the bills.

The hospitals include; Nairobi West Hospital (KSh5,862,734), Embu Level 5 Hospital (KSh 826,270), Tenwek Hospital (KSh737,692), Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (KSh505,023), Athi River Shalom Community Hospital (KSh498,760), St Francis Community Hospital (KSh353,455), Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital – (KSh293,287), Kentap Medical Centre – (KSh256,400), Mbagathi District Hospital (KSh216,810) and Galaxy Hospital Limited (KSh204,298).

Despite her efforts to help mitigate the negative effects of the protests, Hanifa admitted in one of her social media posts that being on the frontline of helping police brutality victims had taken a toll on her mental health.

She also revealed she harboured some regret in taking all the responsibility in managing the fundraiser. At the time, she stated she wishes she would have used a more established organization to further her cause.
