A Nakuru court on Thursday sentenced the grandson of the late President Daniel Moi, Collins Kibet, to seven days imprisonment after disobeying the court's orders to pay child support.
Kibet was arrested on Wednesday after a child support case was filed against him. He had failed to support his two children.
Nakuru Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibelion slapped the ruling on Kibet for not meeting his obligations to support his children with his estranged wife Gladys Jeruto Tagi.
In his ruling, Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibelion directed that Kibet be remanded at the Nakuru GK Prison.
The magistrate further directed that Kibet's lawyers compute all the outstanding amount that he is supposed to pay to support his children and serve the defense lawyers within three days.
The case will be mentioned on September 26, 2024, to confirm compliance.
Kibet was arrested on Wednesday at Ongata Rongai after authorities launched a search for him for seven months.
Kibet went into hiding early this year after a warrant of arrest was placed on him.
His woes date back to 2021 when his estranged wife, Gladys Jeruto Tagi accused him of failing to provide for the upkeep of their two children.
At the time, Kibet alleged that he was broke and could not provide for his children's needs. He also alleged that he was living off well-wishers.
He is accused of failing to support the children’s enrollment at Mustard Seed International School, therefore, disrupting their education and subjecting them to mental anguish.
Tagi, Kibet's estranged wife, through her lawyer Elizabeth Wangari, asked the court to commit Kibet to civil imprisonment for defying court summons concerning the matter.
On his part, Kibet's lawyers have requested the court to grant him more time to comply citing that he is facing financial challenges, along with ongoing succession disputes regarding his father's and grandfather's properties.
