Murang'a Woman Representative Betty Maina has launched a series of allegations against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the impeachment vote before the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 8.
Gachagua, who faces a genuine threat of getting impeached as the deputy president, will learn his fate on Tuesday when Members of Parliament vote on whether the impeachment motion against him should proceed to full trial.
Ahead of the pivotal day, talks on whether he should be impeached continue to garner steam, with the Murang'a representative making her stance clear with some explosive allegations.
Through her Facebook account on Sunday, Betty Maina was adamant that Gachagua should be impeached, noting some instances in the past when the Deputy President allegedly insulted her and her family.
"We have been insulted, threatened, and humiliated," she said on Facebook, adding "On his way to my dowry and the night prior, he said unpalatable and venomous things that broke me completely. The things he has said about me in person, and his associates have said, I have no space for forgiveness."
The Murang'a Woman Representative, who is married to Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, was seemingly responding to Gachagua's plea earlier on Sunday when the DP asked for forgiveness from everyone he had wronged.
In a passionate appeal, Gachagua, during a church service on Sunday, asked political leaders, starting with his boss President William Ruto, to find it in themselves to forgive him.
"I want to say to my brother President William Ruto if, in our zeal to work, I have wronged you, please find it in your heart to forgive me," the besieged Deputy President pleaded.
Despite hailing from the Mount Kenya region, Betty Maina is one of Rigathi Gachagua's harshest critics. One of her fiery speeches came when Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi cryptically suggested in September that Gachagua would be impeached 'in two weeks.
In response, the Murang'a Woman Rep affirmed Sudi's sentiments saying, "If there’s anyone who is going home, he’s the one to take the first ticket to go home. Oscar Sudi gave him two weeks, and we are saying those two weeks he should go home," she said amid a heavy downpour.
Gachagua's uphill task: Despite hiring a powerful team of 20 top lawyers, the odds are not in the Deputy President's favour. Among other charges, he is accused of disrespecting the President and illegally acquiring wealth amounting to KSh 5.2 billion.
Before softening his stance and asking for forgiveness, Gachagua strongly refuted allegations against him, saying the impeachment motion against him was politically motivated. The DP has also been critical of leaders affiliated with ODM, whom he claims want to destabilize the Kenya Kwanza regime.
