As Kenya continues to fight the harsh economic times, the popular International School Gems Cambridge based in Karen, Nairobi, was on Monday put on auction after a court ruling.
In a ruling before the High Court, it was directed that the land on which the property sits be auctioned including all the infrastructure on the parcel measuring 15.5 acres in Nairobi.
The school located along Magadi Road and bordering the Nairobi National Park will be auctioned to interested buyers in a public auction that will be done on Wednesday, October 16, along Kirinyaga Road in Nairobi.
''All that parcel of land known a LR NO.9118/T1 [Now Nrb Block 192/807) A Private High-Cost International School (Previously Operating As Gems Cambridge International School), Karen Nairobi City County measuring 6.278 Ha or 15.513 Acres and registered in the name of Goodison Sixty-One School Limited of Po Box 01515-80100 Mombasa.’’ the notice from the auctioneer read in part.
For interested buyers, the 15-acre property neighbours other international schools such as the Brookhurst International School and Banda School.
The auctioneer also highlighted that the school has modern amenities for interested buyers that include swimming pools, gaming tracks, and an auditorium among other facilities.
Additionally, the school also has modern amenities such as washrooms for the differently abled kids including an executive parents meeting lobby, which would be ideal for investors wishing to continue in the line of an educational institution.
''The property is developed with the following Main School Block, Gym, Auditorium, Student Hostel Block, Swimming Pools and Pool Stand, Football Pitch and Athletics Track, Basketball and Tennis Courts, Gate Houses and Other Buildings,’’ the notice stated.
‘’The Main School Block is an L-shaped three (3) Story building. The Ground Floor has an Entrance Lobby. The auction might affect learning at the institution that prides itself on creating a friendly, open, and encouraging learning environment.
The school initially announced its intention to close down in 2020 and have its students transferred to a nearby international school after opening in Kenya 10 years ago in 2014.
The Gems International School is owned by a Dubai foreign investor and had been using the facility on rental terms from a private developer who reportedly invested Ksh 3 billion to develop the property.
