Doctors at Mbagathi Hospital on Wednesday performed a life-saving surgery on a 10-year boy who was born with a troubling swelling on his right shoulder.

According to information shared by the hospital, the boy has lived with the condition ever since he was born. During this period, the growth composed of blood vessels and fatty tissue, progressively enlarged exacerbating the medical condition.

This caused pain to his family who jumped from one hospital to the next trying to get definitive treatment for the boy without much success. It was only at Mbagathi Hospital where the family got a definitive diagnosis and treatment.

The diagnosis was key to ascertain the extent of the growth which was necessary to help the surgeons weigh whether the surgery was doable and whether it could be done at the public hospital.

A team of surgeons working at the Mbagathi Hospital successfully carried out the procedure which will be instrumental in helping the boy lead a much better life.

The medical team was led by Doctor Hassan Ibrahim and Areeb Chaudrey who are specialists in Thoracic, Cardiac, and Vascular and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery respectively. The team was also assisted by Asphone Kinara, an Anesthesiologist and  Elizabeth Lumire.

''The operation involved meticulous exploration of the shoulder area, dissection of the abnormal growth, and the careful ligation of feeder vessels to prevent excessive bleeding. The surgery, conducted with precision and care, was a success,'' the communication from the hospital read in part.

The boy is currently recovering with doctors keeping a close eye on him before he can be discharged. The specialists led by Dr. Ibrahim, revealed that the medical triumph is a testament to the ability of Kenyan medical practitioners to handle complex medical cases.

“Emmanuel’s case highlights our growing capacity to handle specialized, multidisciplinary procedures,” Ibrahim commented. “We are proud of the outcome and the potential this surgery represents for the future of healthcare at Mbagathi,”

The medical team also relayed their optimism that the young patient would soon recover fully and allow the boy to experience a new lease of life as he embarks on a new chapter.

The surgery came as a big win for the facility especially since many Kenyans are more often than not forced to travel abroad to access such medical care.

According to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, the surgery marked a significant stride for Mbagathi Hospital and will help the facility inspire other facilities that groundbreaking medical procedures can be done.

''This surgery is a major achievement for Mbagathi Hospital, which is increasingly positioning itself as a top facility for handling complex medical cases within Nairobi City County,'' the team maintained.

The patient's mother also revealed that she was elated that the successful operation would enable her son to lead a normal life.

“I am so thankful to the doctors and the entire team at Mbagathi. I never thought we would find a solution, but now my son can look forward to living a normal life,” she said tearfully.
