Motorists using Thika Road were left stranded along the stretch on Saturday after two separate accidents were reported along the busy rote at a time when numerous Nairobians were trooping to the United States International University (USIU) to attend a graduation ceremony.
According to reports, the one of the accidents involved multiple vehicles after a matatu collided with a saloon car. The second accident occurred after two private cars collided.
While motorists attempted to navigate the traffic disruption caused by the accidents, the situation was further exacerbated by the heavy traffic caused by hundreds of Kenyans dashing to attend the USIU graduation using the same road.
Traffic police stepped in in an attempt to ease the congestion but the traffic buildup remained heavy in both directions toward Nairobi and Thika, as such, motorists were forced to seek alternative routes.
The United States International University on Friday had warned of a possible traffic disruption due to the graduation ceremony and hence advised motorists to seek alternative routes to avoid any inconveniences.
"USIU-Africa's 46th Commencement Ceremony scheduled for Saturday, October 12, 2024 from 8.00am to 2.00pm will affect flow of traffic around the university. "read part of the notice.
"We encourage those who may be affected to plan accordingly. Any inconvenience is deeply regretted," a notice published by the institution read.
The snarl-up comes barely three days after road users complained of a similar concern on Wednesday. Road users were caught up in heavy traffic that was barely moving as late as 9 pm.
It is not unusual for businesses to be stranded on Thika Road. In July, a section of the road was closed leading to a similar experience.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) had announced the construction of a footbridge at Juja High Point affecting the busy road and leading to traffic disruptions.
Instances of Kenyans being stranded in heavy traffic have been numerous in the country. This latest incident is a reminder of the importance of proactive traffic management, particularly during significant events that draw large crowds.
In recent years, the city has witnessed rapid urbanization and a growing population, leading to increased vehicle ownership and, consequently, more traffic congestion.
Improving traffic flow during events such as graduations, festivals, or public gatherings requires better coordination between traffic authorities, event organizers, and local law enforcement.
