The National Police Service on Thursday announced the promotion of 183 police officers who have undergone higher training course-HTC and senior training course-STC.
The interviews kicked off on Tuesday, October, 22 2024 and will go on until Tuesday, October, 29 2024 at the Commission offices at the Central Bank of Kenya Pension Towers. This will add to the 515 Chief inspectors promoted since 2019 when the current Commission assumed office.
Promotion Interviews Section 10 (2) of the NPSC Act provides that the Commission may delegate the promotion of officers below the rank of Superintendent of Police to the Inspector General.
In this case, the Commission undertakes promotions of officers of the rank or above the rank of a Superintendent. The ultimate objective of delegation is to enhance efficiency, effectiveness and accountability in the management of the Human Resources in the Service.
It is in line with provision that the Commission announced the interviews for 183 police officers who successfully completed the Higher Training Course and Senior Training Course.
These 6-month promotional courses are designed to prepare officers, currently serving in the rank of Chief Inspector, for leadership roles in the National Police Service (NPS), the Administration Police Service (AP), and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)
In the past 5 years, 417 officers from the Kenya Police Service and 98 officers from the Administration Police Service benefitted from the trainings and ultimately secured promotions.
In 2019, some 290 promoted officers were promoted. 2021 saw another 63 promoted, then in 2022, 162 others were promoted.
The National Police Service Commission is mandated to among others recruit and appoint persons to hold offices in the National Police Service, determine promotions and transfers and exercise disciplinary control in accordance with Article 246 of the Constitution.
The selection criteria for officers attending these courses is determined by respective NPS Promotion Boards in line with guidelines provided by the Commission, ensuring that only deserving candidates are nominated based on merit and service record.
The rigorous training is conducted at the National Police Service training campuses in Kiganjo and Emali. The candidates will be assessed on Governance issues, financial management, communication skills, ethics, leadership and management and general police work.
The Commission will also consider other criteria including; academic qualifications, and discipline. In accordance with the National Police Service Commission (Promotions) Regulations, 2015, undergoing promotional training does not automatically entitle an officer to promotion.
