Nairobi County's Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria on Tuesday cautioned members of the public to beware of imposters seeking to swindle innocent Nairobians in the name of enforcing noise pollution rules.
The County official lamented that some of the business owners have fallen prey to the imposters who defraud Kenyans off their hard-earned money. In some instances, this runs into hundreds of thousands of shillings.
Mosiria explained that some imposters impersonate county environment officers, conducting illegal crackdowns before asking for kickbacks from unsuspecting business owners.
He observed that others purport that they have been sent to take bribes on behalf of County Government officials, only for the business owners to end up being conned.
Mosiria warned business people to desist from paying bribes as it is not lawful. He emphasized that in every scenario where legitimate Nairobi County Government officers arrest persons accused of breaching environmental laws, due legal process is followed.
The county chief environment officer stressed his department has prepared the charge sheets for all those who have been arrested and presented them in court.
“This is the last warning to all those imposters that go out to harass business owners by impersonating Nairobi County Government environment officers,” he warned.
“ We as The County Government of Nairobi under the leadership of Governor Sakaja we do not receive bribes. This is a clean government, the cleanest government we have around,” he stated stressing that his job is to enforce noise pollution regulations,” he added.
Mosiria advised people who have been conned by such imposters to report the matter to the nearest police for further investigations.
“Our work is not to frustrate, your business and take your money,” he noted.
He further called on the public to help out with CCTV footage to help expose the culprits taking advantage to frustrate businesses pretending to conduct a crackdown.
“Our work as the government is just to respond to noise pollution from businesses that breach environmental pollution,” he averred highlighting that during official crackdowns, he is always accompanied by officers from various agencies including police officers, officials from the Liquor and Licensing Board and the National Environment Management Authority of Kenya (NEMA).
The official warned persons responsible for running restaurants, pubs and churches to observe environmental laws especially now when candidates are sitting for national examinations.
