The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has demanded the filling of the vacant position of the Cabinet Secretary of Gender.
In a statement released on their X handle, KEWOPA stated that the position needed filling now, particularly in light of the recent rise in femicide and violence against women and girls. They also decried the little progress made in addressing the issues.
“In recent months, KEWOPA has raised concerns about the distressing rise in femicide and violence against women and girls, yet little progress has been made to address these issues,” the statement stated.
“Our concerns are further heightened by the fact that the position of the Cabinet Secretary for Gender remains vacant,” the statement further added.
The parliamentary association argued that the leadership vacuum is concerning as it is leading to the current happenings going unaddressed and a lack of action towards the same. They claimed that the vacancy results in zero progress towards gender protection and empowerment policies.
“This role is crucial, particularly now, in providing leadership for gender protection and empowerment policies, yet it remains unfilled amidst widespread gender violence,” the statement read in part.
KEWOPA has criticized the government’s and by extension, President Ruto's laxity in delaying the appointment saying it reflected the general attitude of the government towards gender issues.
“The absence of a dedicated advocate at this level underscores a worrying lack of priority given to gender issues,” asserted KEWOPA.
The vacancy in the Ministry of Gender, Culture, the Arts & Heritage was occasioned after President William Ruto dissolved his Cabinet in July 2024 after the aftermath of the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests. The immediate former officeholder was Aisha Jumwa.
President Ruto's nominee to take over the role, Stella Soi Lang’at was rejected by Parliament. The National Assembly’s Committee on Appointments cited her failure to demonstrate strategic planning and cultural insensitivity as reasons behind her rejection.
“The nominee is unsuitable for the position to which she was nominated as she was unable to respond in a satisfactory manner to the queries raised during the approval hearing related to Gender, Heritage, and Culture,” stated the National Assembly.
At the same time, KEWOPA reiterated its drive towards ensuring the eradication of gender-based violence. The association also pledged to support initiatives and causes to raise awareness and protect survivors of gender-based violence.
“KEWOPA is committed to a zero-tolerance approach to gender-based violence. We will collaborate with the government to expedite measures that will address gender-based violence, provide support to survivors, and foster public awareness of the rights and safety of women and girls. While obstacles remain, our advocacy for justice and protection will not waiver.”
