Millicent Omanga has landed another government appointment just a few days after declining an appointment by President William Ruto to join the Nairobi Rivers Commission.
In a Gazette Notice dated Friday, November 8, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi announced Omanga’s appointment to join the Board of the Local Authorities Provident Fund (LAP Fund) alongside three others.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 5 (1) (a) of the Local Authorities Provident Fund Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning appoints— Samwel Kariuki Maina, Beatrice Kones, Millicent Nyaboke, to be members of the Board of the Local Authorities Provident Fund, for three (3) years, with effect from the 8th November 2024,” part of the gazette notice read.
Joining her in her new role will be Samwel Kariuki and Beatrice Kones.
In her new appointment by Mbadi, Omanga will join the board of LAP Fund, which is a Defined Contribution Scheme, registered and regulated by the Retirement Benefits Act of 1997. It is a State Corporation established in 1960 by an Act of Parliament Cap. 272, Laws of Kenya.
On October 26, Omanga declined President Ruto’s appointment to join as a member of the newly constituted Nairobi Rivers Commission, although she expressed her gratitude to the president.
“I’m deeply honored and grateful to Williams Ruto for the trust you’ve shown in appointing me to serve on the Nairobi Rivers Commission. It’s truly a privilege to be considered for such a vital role in improving our beloved Nairobi’s environment and public health. After careful consideration, I must respectfully decline the appointment due to personal reasons,” Omanga asserted in a statement.
“I remain committed to supporting efforts aimed at restoring Nairobi’s rivers and stand ready to contribute in any capacity that aligns with my current commitments. Thank you once again for this honor and for the consideration,” she added.
The Nairobi Rivers Commission was in furtherance with President Ruto’s agenda to regenerate Nairobi rivers by cleaning and rehabilitating them. The new commission will be tasked with ensuring the initiatives to reach this goal are seamlessly met.
On October 29, President Ruto revoked Omanga’s appointment and in her place appointed Josephat Abaga Fan Sagero to join 11 others who would be headed by former Starehe MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru.
“The appointment of Omanga Millicent is revoked pursuant to section 51 of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act,” part of the gazette notice read opening the door for Omanga to receive new government appointments.
