The Orange Democratic Party (ODM) on Monday, November 18, released a statement issuing further directions on the upcoming grassroots elections expected to be held on November 27.
In the statement, the party’s National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) highlighted new regulations while also clarifying prior directives issued in a press statement on November 4.
“In collaboration with the Party's Legal Committee, the NECC conducted training and officially appointed the County Elections Committees (CECs) for all the forty-seven (47) Counties,” the party announced in the statement.
To start with, the ongoing registration of members will temporarily be suspended on Wednesday, November 20, to facilitate the preparation of the voter register.
The party clarified that only the specific polling unit elections will be conducted at the gazetted polling centres across the country and that each polling unit will elect 30 officials who will include 10 officials each for the three committees including; the Steering Committee, Women League and Youth League.
In order to facilitate the election process, the party members have been directed to show up at their respective polling centres on November 25 to elect a presiding officer who will oversee elections at each unit.
Members who are interested in contesting for any of the unit official positions will need to pay a non-refundable fee of Ksh100 to the presiding officer on the morning of the elections before 10 am and acquire a receipt for the same.
“Members eligible to vote and vie for positions will undergo electronic verification at their respective polling units/centres,” the statement clarified.
Lastly, any candidate aggrieved by the election results will be eligible to appeal by lodging a complaint in the prescribed format and paying a fee of ksh3,000 within 24 hours after the declaration of the results.
The payment will be wired to the party’s mobile payment system which was also shared in the statement.
In the meantime, party members have been encouraged to use the remaining days to acquaint themselves with the party election guidelines so that they can ensure a smooth election period.
Those still willing to register as members of the party in order to vote also have until November 20 to do so.
