At least six people have sustained injuries following multiple car accidents along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. The accident has resulted in the temporary closure of the highway.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning in the Muguga area in Kiambu County. According to pictures seen by Kenyans.co.ke, at least seven vehicles were involved in the collision.

Witnesses say the accident happened when a stalled vehicle, which was not visible, was rammed from behind. This triggered a chain reaction causing several other vehicles to collide.

In the images, one small Canter-type lorry hit the stalled lorry, destroying its front end. The front of the white lorry landed partly on top of the first lorry which had overturned.

It remains unclear whether the lorry that had overturned, overturned after or before the accident. In the pictures, the truck can be seen lying on one side of the busy highway. The lorry was ferrying what looked like vegetables and bananas.

A long-distance lorry smashed into the back of the second Canter-type lorry and was in turn hit by another lorry on its rear. Police officers from Kikuyu Police Station confirmed that no deaths were recorded and cleared the road swiftly.

Just two days ago, several people sustained serious injuries after a lorry ferrying construction materials was involved in an accident at the White House Estate area in Nakuru County.

The accident happened along the Nakuru-Nyahururu Road on Monday after a lorry rammed into stationary vehicles parked on the side of the road.

The truck reportedly suffered brake failure. Desperate attempts by the driver to control the vehicle resulted in it ramming into four stationary vehicles.

Footage seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed several vehicles, including a private car and a matatu, severely damaged.

Between January and November this year, 4,282 people have died on the roads, according to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Of this, pedestrians account for 1,637 deaths, followed by motorcyclists at 1,045, passengers at 788, and drivers at 369.

372 pillion passengers and 72 pedal cyclist deaths have been reported as well.
