Nyandarua Senator John Methu has written to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi urging him to convene a special seating to discuss the unresolved cases of abductions currently rocking the country.

In the letter shared by the lawmaker through his X account on Monday, January 6, Methu noted that the calls for an end to abductions were a matter of national importance that needed Parliamentary intervention.

According to Senator Methu, the continuous abduction of Kenyans raised deep national concern as it infringed on the fundamental human rights and freedoms enshrined in our Constitution.

“Notwithstanding the provisions of Standing Order No. 33 (1), I wish to request your approval for a Special Sitting of the Senate to deliberate on a matter of critical national importance, namely: The end of forced abductions and disappearances of young government critics,” read part of Methu's letter.

Addressing Speaker Kingi, the Senator also took a swipe at the National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for allegedly distancing themselves from the ongoing menace.

While hitting out at the two security organs, the legislature claimed that the alleged abductors belonged to a well-established syndicate whose aim was to silence government critics.

“Mr Speaker, this House must take the necessary steps to demand immediate action by the Government to stop these illegal and unconstitutional practices,” Methu told Speaker Kingi.

Methu's call for the special seating comes amid an uproar among Kenyans who have threatened to stage nationwide demonstrations over the increasing cases of abductions.

The demonstrations had been scheduled to kick off today (Monday) from 9:00 am as Kenyans sought to compel the government to intervene and trace those abducted.

Amidst calls for protests, four abductees were released including social media influencers Billy Mwangi and Peter Muteti who were found alive on Monday, January 6

The duo was released alongside Cartoonist Kibet Bull's brothers Ronny Kiplagat and Benard Kavuli who were found alive in Machakos County and Kitale respectively.

While confirming Billy Mwangi's whereabouts, the latter's family revealed that their kin arrived at his father's home in Majengo today morning after 15 days.
