At least five people were feared dead after a truck ferrying maize from Sirare towards Migori was involved in a fatal accident in Mabera, Migori County.
The tragic accident happened on Sunday evening at the bridge from Nyabohanse towards Mabera, a notorious black spot that has claimed many lives in the past.
The incident occurred when the overloaded lorry lost control before hitting two motorbikes simultaneously.
As a result, five people died on the spot including a pedestrian who was on the roadside.
The impact of the lorry was so severe that the bodies of the deceased were tossed several meters away from the scene of the accident.
One of the motorbikes that was hit carrying two female teachers while the other a rider. A pedestrian was also killed in the fatal accident.
The driver of the lorry sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a local hospital in an unconscious state.
The bodies of the deceased have been transferred to Migori County hospital's mortuary pending a post-mortem by the government pathologist.
Between January and November of 2024, 4,282 people died on the roads, according to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
Of that number, pedestrians accounted for 1,637 deaths, followed by motorcyclists at 1,045, passengers at 788, and drivers at 369.
Similarly, 372 pillion passengers and 72 pedal cyclist deaths have been reported as well.
According to NTSA, many accidents occur over the weekends and holidays, with the hours 5 pm to 8 am being considered as peak accident hours.
