Hundreds of learners in Isebania, Migori County were left stranded after the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) closed two institutions in the county.
The institutions including Cambridge Universal College failed to meet the regulatory standards required for vocational training institutes.
The students were asked to transfer to compliant institutions and explore avenues to recover financial losses from the school fees they had paid.
Learners who were continuing with their studies were shocked to learn that their institutions were not on the list of registered TVET institutions.
Speaking during the enforcement of the closure, the representatives of the TVET Authority Board stressed the importance of maintaining quality training in vocational disciplines.
"The institution is not registered, and its courses are not accredited. We hereby close it with immediate effect," Kipkemoi Lang'at Samuel, a TVETA official stated.
He added they had come to effect the closure, "We are here on behalf of the board to enforce the decision to close this institution (Cambridge Universal College) until it complies."
The students expressed their disappointment over wasted time and resources noting they had thought the school was registered and duly accredited by TVETA.
"It is a bad day for us, as a student fraternity. We are not happy with what has happened today," one student lamented.
"It has come to our attention that our school is not registered with the TVET Authority so we might experience closure," the student went on to add.
The closure comes barely a month after another college in Nakuru on December 17, 2024 was exposed by students over what they termed as a plan the owners to siphon money from them.
Reportedly, some of the students had enrolled to study computer courses but on arrival at the institution, there were no computers available except empty halls.
Over the past few years tertiary institutions especially colleges and vocational institutes have sprung all over the country with a good number of them not accredited by TVETA which is tasked with a mandate to regulate and coordinate training within the technical education sector.
TVETA which is a State Corporation established under the TVET Act No. 29 of 2013, is among the bodies in charge of regulating the vocational education sector.
