The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested the Bomet County Director of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) for allegedly soliciting a bribe.
In a statement on Friday morning, the commission revealed that the officer was arrested on July 23 for allegedly soliciting and receiving a Ksh25,000 bribe.
The officer reportedly demanded the bribe to allow the complainant to continue operating a lodging facility located in Mulot Township without the requisite approval.
According to EACC, it received reports of a bribery attempt on Tuesday, July 22, and upon preliminary investigations, an operation was conducted that led to the arrest of the suspect.
Following his arrest in Bomet town, the suspect was escorted to Bomet Police Station for interviewing, processing, and statement recording regarding the allegations.
He was booked for the offences of soliciting and receiving a bribe but was later released on a cash bail of Ksh30,000, pending the outcome of the ongoing inquiry.
While warning against such vices, the Commission reiterated its commitment to tackling bribery at service delivery points to restore public trust and improve access to quality services.
The arrest of the NEMA County Director comes barely five days after EACC detectives apprehended two officials from the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) based in Kirinyaga County.
The duo were arrested on July 18 after receiving a Ksh60,000 bribe to facilitate the payment of goods worth Ksh2.77 million. Reports suggested that the officers had initially demanded Ksh270,000.
Following their arrest, the suspects were booked at Kerugoya Police Station and later processed at the EACC Central Regional Offices in Nyeri. However, a third suspect managed to escape.
The officers were later released on a cash bail of Ksh100,000 each, pending their appearance before the Kerugoya Anti-Corruption Court.
"EACC remains committed to fighting corruption and upholding integrity in public service," the Commission affirmed.
