The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of moderate to heavy rainfall in different parts of the country for the next five days between January 29 and February 2.
Kenya Met Director General David Gikungu on Wednesday announced that rains were expected to continue over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the South-eastern lowlands.
According to Gikungu, the five regions would experience occasional rains during the first half of the forecast period. However, regions of the Southwestern and South Rift Valley were likely to experience rainfall throughout the forecast period.
He projected the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, and Kakamega to receive heavy downpour for the next five days.
The weatherman also disclosed that the above counties would receive heavy downpours mainly in the afternoon while light rains were expected in the morning and at night.
Similarly, Gikungu stated that the Highland East counties of Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi would receive heavy rains in the first two days of the forecast period.
However, rains in the Highland East Counties were predicted to subside in the last three days with sunny conditions expected on Saturday, February 1, and Sunday, February 2.
Southeastern Counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties as well as inland parts of Tana River County were also projected to receive rains but in moderate amounts.
Meanwhile, Gikungu reiterated that parts of the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya were likely to remain generally sunny and dry though a few areas could experience occasional rainfall at the beginning of the forecast period.
Temperature Advisory
The meteorological department in its weekly advisory also warned of very cold night temperatures categorically in the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi.
According to the Kenya Met Director General, the night temperatures in the above counties were expected to drop to 7°C in the first three days of the forecast before rising to 9°C for the rest of the days.
Additionally, residents living in Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet and Kakamega were cautioned to brace for high daytime temperatures of up to 31°C.
Other counties that were cautioned to prepare for hot days include Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale.
