Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei on Thursday, February 20, hinted at an impending overhaul of the government, particularly among Principal Secretaries.
Speaking after Oburu’s selection to chair the Senate Energy Committee, Cherargei, a key ally of President William Ruto, suggested further changes in senior state positions, alleging that future appointments would favour allies of Raila Odinga.
According to the senator, this move aims to build a broad-based government by incorporating leaders allied with the former Prime Minister.
“In the near future, the incoming changes to Permanent (Principal) Secretaries (PSs) and other appointments shall fully reflect a broad-based government,” Cherargei remarked.
“Congratulations to my colleague, Senator Oburu Odinga, for being elected unanimously as the Senate Chairperson of the Energy Committee,” he added.
According to Cherargei, Raila's growing influence will be evident in both the Executive and Parliament, which he described as a move aimed at streamlining government operations and activities.
“We are further broadening and widening the broad-based government, both in the Executive and Parliament. This shall ensure seamless service delivery across the country,” he asserted.
Cherargei further reiterated his stand on Raila himself joining the government in an official capacity through the creation of the Office of the Prime Minister. Cherargei recently grabbed headlines after advocating for the implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report that provided for the office of the PM.
Speaking after Raila’s loss at the African Union Commission Chairmanship loss, Cherargei noted that urgent action needed to be taken to ensure that Raila occupies the seat he once held from 2008 to 2013.
"We must now fully implement the NADCO Report by amending the 2010 Constitution to create the office of the Prime Minister (PM) and allow Rt. Hon. Baba Raila Odinga to serve Kenyans in that capacity," Cherargei stated on Monday, February 17.
"We cannot allow such brilliant leadership and experience to go to waste the way the African Union did. This is the only way we can appreciate and reward him for his fight for the rule of law and democracy in Kenya."
The latest developments come at a time when the country’s political landscape is at a fever pitch, with leaders vying for influence in the lead-up to the 2027 General Elections.
