A police officer in Nairobi is nursing injuries following a shootout between him and another officer attached to the General Service Unit (GSU).
According to a police report, the injured officer of the police constable rank was shot after he encountered two suspects smoking bhang along Gigiri Road in Nairobi.
Following the encounter, the constable who was in the company of his colleague inquired to know why the suspects were smoking bang, only for one of them, the GSU officer, to draw a pistol and shoot him in the right hip.
It soon turned out that the shooter was a GSU officer attached to a foreign President's Nairobi residence.
A report filed at the Gigiri Police Station stated that the officer was on patrol with a colleague when they encountered a suspect sitting under a shade, smoking bhang at the edge of a residence’s wall.
"As they approached him, the suspect started running away, defying their order to stop. When the police officers challenged him to halt, he responded by opening fire, shooting Police Constable Dennis Okenye in the right hip,'' read part of the police report.
Police officers who responded to the scene found the GSU assailant armed with a Ceska pistol given to him by the government.
They subsequently disarmed the officer as emergency responders rushed the injured officer to a city hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Additionally, medical reports indicated that the officer who was shot is in stable condition, with the bullet lodged in his right hip.
''The suspect is currently detained at Gigiri Police Station, and his firearm has been confiscated for ballistic analysis,'' the report added.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) have taken over the matter even as the officer has been placed in the disciplinary process.
Meanwhile, senior security authorities were yet to comment or issue a statement on the incident which set tongues wagging.
