The government, through the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), has urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to be cautious of the content consumed by their children, who are currently on a half-term break.
In a statement on Thursday, February 27, KFCB advised parents and guardians to carefully monitor the audio-visual content their children watch on television during the one-week break.
The film classification board also encouraged parents to supervise online platforms and other broadcast media channels accessed by their children and to guide them appropriately.
“Schools are closed for the mid-term break, and children will be home for the next few days, throughout the weekend. KFCB appeals to parents and guardians to monitor the audio-visual content that children are watching on TV,” the board stated.
Parents were also encouraged to set screen-time rules and limit the amount of time children spend on television and other broadcast channels including social media.
Similarly, KFCB also urged content creators to be mindful of the content that they post on various platforms which could be accessed by children and minors.
The film's classification board also went ahead to caution video show and play station operators and other film exhibitors against admitting children into their premises.
"We encourage parents to set screen-time rules and limit the amount of time children spend on TV and other broadcast channels. KFCB also urges content creators to be mindful of the content they post," KFCB recommended.
"Additionally, the film classification board cautions video show and PlayStation operators, as well as other film exhibitors, against admitting children into their premises."
While calling for adherence to these regulations, KFCB expressed its commitment to enhancing parents' awareness of emerging technologies through the Parent Digital Literacy Programme (PDLP).
The digital literacy programme aims to empower parents with skills on how to monitor and guide children in content access and consumption through digital platforms.
The latest announcement comes days after schools across the country released students for a one-week half-term break which commenced on February 26 and is expected to end on March 2. Meanwhile, most institutions are expected to re-open on March 3.
