The Kenya Railways Corporation has dismissed allegations that services at the Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station have been temporarily suspended.

In a statement on Thursday, February 27, the Corporation refuted a viral social media post claiming that all automatic check-in machines at the Mombasa SGR station had failed.

The misleading post alleged that the suspension of check-in services at the railway station had resulted in long queues as frustrated passengers struggled to access services.

According to the false claims, Chinese experts reviewed the system and suggested that two popular Kenyan bus companies could have hacked it.

“News is coming in now indicating that the automatic check-in machines at Mombasa SGR Station have all failed.  Queues of frustrated, hot, tired passengers stretching to Tudor on the island,” read part of the flagged post.

Similarly, the Corporation also flagged another fake social media post suggesting that an SGR  train from Mombasa had derailed in Kibwezi, Machakos County.

While addressing the allegations, Kenya Railways termed the two posts fake and misleading, further urging Kenyans not to fall for such information unless it was from the Corporation’s official accounts.

The latest clarification comes barely a week after the Corporation warned Kenyans against fraudulent job advertisements circulating on various social media platforms.

In a statement dated February 19, Kenya Railways called on members of the public to verify such information through the Corporation’s official accounts.

Additionally, the Corporation emphasised that all communications from Kenya Railways bear the Corporation’s official logo and contact details.

“Kenya Railways wishes to notify the public of fraudulent job advertisements currently circulating on various online platforms, some of which are requesting payment for applications or interviews,” read part of a statement by Kenya Railways.

“We urge the public to be vigilant and note that official job vacancies are advertised on the Corporation's official website: www.krc.co.ke, MYGOV Newspaper, and the official social media platforms.”
