Authorities have arrested a key suspect in the murder case of British national Campbell Scott, days after the British national was found dead in Makueni.
The suspect, according to police, had fled to Mombasa where he was in hiding after committing the crime on February 18. He was apprehended and transported to Nairobi where police intended to present him in court for a miscellaneous application to detain him.
Two suspects believed to be accomplices remain at large with investigators believing they are either hiding in Nairobi or Mombasa.
While detectives termed the arrest a major breakthrough in the case, they did not divulge the details of the motive behind the murder.
A taxi driver and a waiter who had earlier been detained by police as prime suspects were cleared of any wrongdoing and will instead act as witnesses in the case.
The suspect was presented at Milimani Court on Monday, March 3, for the application and will remain in remand for another 21 days alongside another suspect to allow police to conclude investigations.
Meanwhile, Campbell's cause of death is yet to be comprehensively established as the autopsy results came back inconclusive since soft tissue injuries discovered on his body, according to pathologists, were found to be non-lethal.
The autopsy was conducted last Thursday at a mortuary in Makueni by Government Pathologist Dr. Richard Njoroge, with the late Campbell's family in attendance.
What is certain, however, is that Campbell was killed elsewhere and his body dumped in Makongo Forest—about 96 kilometers from where he was last seen.
Earlier police findings suggested that the businessman, who was last seen on February 17 while attending a conference in Westlands, was struck with a blunt object or strangled.
The body was found stashed in a green sack by herders and there was initial uncertainty as to whether it was that of the missing 58-year-old. When herders discovered him, his hands and legs were bound with a green nylon rope.
Last week, CCTV footage emerged showing Campbell's last movements where he was seen walking through a car park, dressed in a blue top featuring the Scotland flag on his sleeve and casual shorts. This suggested he was running informal errands in the moments leading up to his disappearance.
