The Kenya Meteorological Department has cautioned Kenyans to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall over the weekend, from Friday, March 7, to Tuesday, March 11.
In its weekend rainfall advisory published on Friday, the department noted that rainfall is expected in eight regions, including the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Central and South Rift Valley.
According to Kenya Met, rainfall is also projected in the Coastal Region, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Northwest, and the southern part of the Coast.
“Most parts of the country will experience predominantly sunny, dry, and hot weather conditions, followed by possible rainfall in several areas, particularly from the weekend onward,” Kenya Met announced.
“Isolated storms are also expected in these areas during this period, especially over the weekend,” the meteorological department added.
The Highland East Counties of Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi were expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the weekend to Tuesday next week.
As per the advisory, the aforementioned counties would experience sunny and hot conditions on Friday but were projected to begin receiving rain from Saturday afternoon.
Similarly, the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and Nandi were predicted to receive heavy rains from Sunday, March 9 to Tuesday, March 12.
Other counties that were projected to experience a similar weather pattern include Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot Counties.
However, counties in the North Eastern region including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo were expected to experience sunny conditions over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the meteorological department cautioned of high temperatures above 30°C in most of the country, except areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, where temperatures will stay below 30°C.
Strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) are anticipated in parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.
