The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has issued updates on the upcoming grassroots elections in 22 counties on April 11 and 12.

In a statement following a meeting of the National Steering Committee and the National Elections Board on March 10, UDA National Chairperson Cecily Mbarire stated that 10,000 gadgets had already been procured to facilitate the exercise.

She noted that this would ensure democracy and fairness during the election, adding that it would be conducted entirely through a digital electronic framework.

"The UDA's foresight strategy emphasizes participatory leadership as a cornerstone of our democratic framework. True democracy flourishes when every citizen has the opportunity to engage in the political process," the statement read.

"We have procured over 10,000 gadgets to ensure that the elections are conducted seamlessly through a digital electronic framework that will ensure the election is open, free, fair, and with instantaneous results at the close of polls."

In addition, she noted that thousands of candidates had already registered to vie in the designated 22 counties and encouraged more to apply before the portal closes on March 21.

She also called on party members to participate in phase two of the UDA grassroots elections, highlighting its importance in ensuring that community voices are heard and represented. She added that it helped empower local leaders and foster a leadership that is not only responsive but also accountable to the people.

"In these counties, 113,800 candidates have so far registered to contest. The registration for candidates is now open and will remain available until Friday, March 21, 2025, at midnight. Interested members can register through our online portal UDA.ke," the statement read.

"These elections represent a pivotal moment in our journey towards strengthening democracy in our nation."

Five counties have reportedly already conducted their grassroots elections.

Among the counties scheduled for elections on April 11 are Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kajiado, Turkana, Kisii, Nyamira, Bungoma, Migori, Siaya, and Kisumu.

On April 12, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River will hold theirs.
