The Ministry of Roads and Transport has introduced short courses in driving, plant operation, civil engineering, and other trades at the Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology (KIHBT).
The announcement, made on Tuesday, March 11, includes courses examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).
This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to expand access to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The programmes are open to school leavers and working professionals seeking to upgrade their skills.
The driving courses include elementary driving at Ksh12,500 for four weeks, refresher and defensive driving at Ksh12,500 for one week, and driver instructor training at Ksh30,000 for six weeks.
Additionally, fleet management training for engineers and transport officers will be available for Ksh 30,000 over one week.
For those interested in plant operation, a comprehensive two-month training will be offered at Ksh65,490. Civil engineering training is available as part of diploma programmes, with tuition fees of Ksh21,474 per term, while building construction courses will also be provided under similar conditions.
The masonry and plumbing programmes, examined by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), will cost Ksh30,000 each for three months. Other construction-related courses include electrical installation, light vehicle mechanics, construction plant mechanics, refrigeration and air conditioning, solar PV installation, and tiling, each priced at Ksh30,000 for a three-month duration.
Those seeking advanced training can enrol in diploma courses in civil engineering, electrical engineering (power option), mechanical engineering (automotive and industrial plant), and architecture. The diploma courses require a minimum KCSE grade of C- and cost an average of Ksh21,474 per term for tuition, with additional accommodation and meal expenses of Ksh27,000 per term.
Additionally, short courses in road construction, quality control, bridge maintenance, and project management will be offered, with fees ranging from Ksh53,510 to Ksh140,000, depending on the duration and complexity of the course.
All applicants must submit copies of their academic certificates, national identification cards, and birth certificates. A non-refundable application fee of Ksh1,000 is payable upon registration through the eCitizen portal.
According to the Ministry, these courses aim to bridge the country’s technical skills gap, equipping young Kenyans with the expertise needed for self-employment and formal job opportunities.
