11 Prisons Miss Out on IEBC Voter Registration

11 Prisons did not participate in the voter registration exercise carried out by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

According to a statement from the commission, the 11 centres; Shimo Borstal, Maara, Marimanti, Mutomo, Oloitok Tok, Shikusa Borstal Institution, Vihiga Prison, Kehancha Prison/Kendege, Nyamira Prison, Kamiti YCTC and Kamae Girls’ Borstal Institution had no eligible voters.

IEBC stated that the seven-day registration exercise conducted between February 20 and 27 in over 109 prisons across the country registered 4,094 new inmates.

Kamiti Maximum Security Prison recorded the highest figure with 585 enrolments followed by Shimo la Tewa Prison (257), Naivasha Main Prison (182), Embu Main Prison (173) and Meru Main Prison (164).

1,856 prisoners applied for voter transfers given that they had already registered before they were imprisoned and wanted to participate in the August polls.

In the diaspora program that ran parallel to the inmates’ exercise, IEBC registered 1,521 eligible Kenyan citizens in East Africa and South Africa.

South Africa led the pack with 665 new voters, followed by Tanzania (361), Uganda (247), while Rwanda and Burundi registered 201 and 47 respectively.

The exercise was conducted at the Kenyan high commissions and consulates in the respective countries
