The Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome Saturday, April 27, directed the deployment of police and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officers along major highways.

In a statement, Koome noted that the officers will ensure there is order along the highways ahead of school re-opening amid a major disaster experienced on Kenyan roads following the current heavy rains.

The police boss also urged motorists to take caution and cooperate with the law enforcement officers and other multi-agencies placed on various roads.

Bus drivers and Bodaboda riders have further been advised to follow the traffic rules and avoid breaking laws put in place.

“In the best interest of children that will be travelling back to school, and for the safety of the general public, the National Police Service would like to caution all motorists and boda boda riders to be extra vigilant on the roads, and strictly comply with traffic regulations and rules,” the statement read in part.

Citing recent disasters resulting from flooding, the Inspector General noted that many lives had been lost as roads and estates have been rendered impassable and inhabitable respectively.

"It is expected that road traffic, both human and vehicular, will be very heavy next week."

According to data from the government, the country has lost 75 lives, while 22 were left and 8 are still missing since the onset of the heavy rains.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua speaking on Friday noted that the government had released Ksh4 billion to mitigate the disaster, urging Kenyans to take caution and avoid daring nature.

"We appeal to Kenyans to be responsible for their own lives and safety. Do not dare nature. In some instances, we have seen people being adventurous and daring to cross swollen rivers," Gachagua stated.

"We urge Kenyans to exercise caution and be responsible for their own lives. They must know they carry the aspirations of their families."

The second in command further directed schools not affected by the ongoing flooding to report back as scheduled by the government.
