Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has rescued a young woman who was reportedly tied up, defiled, and filmed by her ex-boyfriend in Mwiki, Nairobi City County.
Sonko revealed that the victim had been living in fear and hiding at her cousin's home, afraid the suspect might return and harm her, an ordeal that left her traumatised and reportedly considering suicide.
According to Sonko, the victim survived only because of the bravery of her friend, who refused to let her give up and alerted authorities and supporters who could intervene.
"We have finally traced the young girl who was brutalised, tied up, raped, and filmed. Her suffering is unspeakable, and at one point, she was driven so low that she nearly took her own life," Sonko noted in a statement shared on his social media accounts.
"But she is alive today because of the courage of her friend, who refused to let her give up," he continued.
According to the former Nairobi boss, the suspect was arrested after the incident, but mysteriously got released from police custody after disguising himself as a drunkard.
Since November, the suspect had been assaulting the woman and ended up tying her, defiling her, and filming her before setting her house ablaze.
Sonko assured both the victim and and the friend of full protection as investigations continue, warning that the case will not be swept aside.
He pledged relentless pursuit of justice, saying no threats or intimidation would prevent accountability.
"This case will not be buried. Justice will be pursued lawfully, relentlessly, and without compromise," he stated.
Sonko later said that detectives had arrested the suspect, who is now in police custody and expected to face multiple charges, including grievous harm, arson, and threatening to kill.
"We extend our deep and sincere appreciation to the DCI and the entire team for their swift, decisive action," he concluded.
By the time of posting, DCI had not issued a statement confirming the arrest.
This comes days after Sonko publicly confronted his son-in-law over alleged domestic abuse involving his daughter, positioning himself as a vocal champion against sexual and gender-based violence.
