The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested 38 suspects linked to a spate of robberies targeting pedestrians and motorists along major Nairobi highways during President William Ruto's tours of the city.
The suspects, now in custody across various police stations, are accused of terrorising residents along Thika Highway, Waiyaki Way, and Jogoo Road. These areas have recently witnessed a surge in attacks, with criminals using motorcycles to ambush victims, snatch valuables, and flee the scene.
According to the DCI, during the operation, seven motorcycles believed to have been used in the robberies were recovered, along with several mobile phones stolen from victims. The items have been secured as exhibits and will be presented as evidence in court.
On March 11, the city experienced unrest and a spike in criminal activity following the president's rally in Mathare. Groups of youths engaged in widespread looting and vandalism along major roads, including Thika Road, Juja Road, and Outering Road. Motorists and businesses were targeted, leading to panic and disruption.
Images and videos released online showed motorists being attacked while in a matatu, while others in personal cars were also not spared.
The chaos began shortly after the president's speech in Mathare. As his convoy departed, groups of youths blocked sections of Thika Road near the National Youth Service headquarters and the Kariobangi Roundabout.
They smashed car windows and forcibly snatched valuables from passengers. The unrest quickly spread to Juja Road and Outering Road, disrupting transport and commercial activities. Panicked motorists were forced to make diversions to avoid encounters with the marauding groups. Police intervention included firing warning shots into the air to disperse the aggressive crowds.
The situation escalated to the point where police fired warning shots to disperse the violent groups. Consequently, President Ruto canceled a planned rally in Roysambu and returned to the State House.
Similar incidents were reported after Ruto’s tour of the Eastlands on Friday. Kenyans along Jogoo Road reported being mugged, their bags and belongings being snatched when they encountered the roudy youth.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, where they will face charges including robbery with violence, preparation to commit a felony, and obstruction. The DCI has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
The recent wave of robberies has left residents on edge, with many expressing frustration over the brazen nature of the attacks.
Victims have recounted harrowing experiences of being ambushed by armed assailants, often in broad daylight.
In response to the incidents, the DCI has deployed additional officers to patrol the affected areas and has intensified intelligence-gathering efforts. The agency has also called on the public to provide information that could lead to the arrest of more suspects.
