Chief Inspector Isaac Njiriani, a Kenyan police officer, was recently awarded a Gold Medal for attaining a first position in order of merit in his Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication programme at the Central University of Punjab’s School of Information and Communication Studies.
The officer made history by being the first international student of African descent to receive the medal, which is the university’s highest honour after his remarkable achievement.
Njiraini, who works at the Directorate of Corporate Communication at the National Police Services headquarters, received the award at the university’s graduation ceremony, which was held in Bathinda, Punjab State, India, on March 11, 2025.
The development was communicated by the NPS, which lauded Njiraini for his commendable feat, adding it was a proud moment for the service and the country as a whole.
“This is no mean feat. It has brought honour, glory, and pride to the National Police Service and to Kenya,” the NPS stated in a statement.
“The National Police Service (NPS) takes pride in Chief Inspector Isaac Njiraini Muhia as a distinguished trailblazer and an accomplished scholar, embodying the virtues of hard work and dedication to duty. He is a shining example and a mentor to police officers aspiring to pursue academic excellence,” the police force added.
In his thesis, Njiraini focused on health communication, particularly misinformation in prostate cancer. This is an emerging issue in the discourse around sickness, as misinformation affects patient decisions and trust in medical professions.
Aside from his educational exploits, Njiraini was credited for his immense contribution to the institution’s co-curricular activities, where he served as a Foreign Delegate Member in the 16th National Youth Parliament (NYP) of India.
“He participated in the NYP's annual competition, organised to foster democratic values, encourage public speaking, and enhance parliamentary awareness among students. The Central University of Punjab won first place, becoming the National Champion,” NPS noted.
Njiraini managed to do the degree program through a government institution that promotes cultural exchange between India and other countries.
“He undertook the course through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Scholarship Scheme, a government institution that promotes cultural exchange between India and other countries,” NPS informed.
In praising one of their own, NPS expressed their optimism in Njiraini’s utilization of his newly-acquired degree and their pride in the CI setting an example for the rest of the force.
“The National Police Service (NPS) takes pride in Chief Inspector Isaac Njiraini Muhia as a distinguished trailblazer and an accomplished scholar, embodying the virtues of hard work and dedication to duty. He is a shining example and a mentor to police officers aspiring to pursue academic excellence,” the police force expressed.
“The knowledge and skills he has acquired will be instrumental in promoting public confidence and trust by conveying informative, accurate, timely, and factual information to build and promote a positive image of the NPS. We wish him well as he steadily rises to the top echelons of the police service,” the NPS added.
