The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) on Saturday evening cautioned 3 nightclubs in the Lavington area of Nairobi County to enforce mechanisms to mitigate noise pollution.

In a statement, the authority cautioned that the three clubs risked being shut down if they failed to enforce the mechanisms.

NEMA argued that the lack of noise pollution control measures was affecting the largely residential neighbourhoods of Kilimani and Lavington, which are considered high-brow estates.

"NEMA environmental inspectors accompanied by NEMA police unit officers today undertook an inspection in Lavington and  Kilimani areas and issued orders to three clubs to immediately put in place robust Noise pollution control measures, failure to which the facilities face closure," read the directive in part.

The directive came months after the Nairobi County Government put nightclubs operating in residential areas on notice.

Last year, Governor Johnson Sakaja banned all nightclubs from operating in residential areas and restricted them to commercial areas.

At the time, a communique from the state indicated that commercial areas would be situated along major roads and characterised by compatible land uses such as offices and commercial establishments.

Overall, the areas included Nairobi Central Business District, Industrial area, shopping malls, Westlands, Ngara Shopping Center. Upper Hill, Pangani, Karen, and Triangle.

Other spots were towns dotted along Thika Road, Mombasa Road, Eastern Bypass, Kangundo Road and Kiambu Road.

In Nairobi CBD, the designated areas are Tom Mboya Street, Moi Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue, University Way, Koinange Street, Nairobi River, Haile Selassie, Uhuru Highway, River Road and Harry Thuku Road.

The county will also require the nightclub owner to provide a map delineating the precise locations where the establishments are permitted to operate legally.

Of note, nightclubs are prohibited from being situated within the confines of the Government Square or within a government precinct.
