Former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has congratulated Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli on becoming a father and urged him to consider stepping down from his role as SG.
While congratulating Atwoli, Kibwana encouraged him to take paternity leave and, in doing so, challenged the union on the longevity of Atwoli's tenure in the position. Atwoli has held the COTU SG position for 23 years.
The positive message took a twist when the former governor urged COTU to use the opportunity during Atwoli’s paternity leave to discuss whether it was appropriate for union leaders to hold their positions for life.
"I heartily congratulate the COTU Secretary-General, Francis Atwoli, and his family on the new addition to their family. COTU Kenya should grant their Secretary-General a well-deserved paternity leave, during which they can also discuss: Should COTU and trade union leadership be a lifetime tenure?" Kibwana challenged.
While responding to Kibwana, Atwoli defended his tenure, stating that, like Kibwana, he possesses skills that cannot be diminished, a profession that has no expiry, and the experience necessary for the union.
"Secondly, you and I are age mates. And I just saw you being appointed as a Professor of Law at Daystar University the other day. So, Prof, help me understand—when does your profession come to an end?
"Can a professor really stop reading, teaching, and writing? When will you stop engaging your mind?" Atwoli asked.
The COTU SG revealed that, in his capacity, he had fought for Kenyan workers to receive paternity leave and had even formulated policies to support the same.
"I have fought for Kenyan workers to receive paternity leave as part of my work in bringing about the five sets of labour laws. You will realise that these laws, along with the Constitution of Kenya 2010, as stated in Article 41, have empowered the Kenyan worker above all else in the region," Atwoli stated.
Journalist Mary Kilobi welcomed her first child with Atwoli after seven years of marriage. Their son, only known as Atwoli Junior, is the latest addition to the SG's family, which includes other grown children.
Kilobi and Atwoli’s relationship began in 2016, leading to their traditional wedding in 2018. Their marriage sparked controversy after Kilobi’s ex-fiancé accused Atwoli of being a "wife snatcher."
The couple has yet to share more details about their newborn son. The Standard has reported that Kilobi is currently on leave.
