Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has expressed fear for his life following a recent incident where goons almost attacked him at a funeral in the Kiminini Constituency.
Natembeya, who spoke during a seed distribution exercise in Kaplamai ward, Trans Nzoia County, accused the government of allegedly sending goons to attack him during the burial of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati.
Addressing the area residents on Saturday, March 29, Natembeya claimed that the recent plot against him was due to his constant criticism of the government.
According to the former Rift Valley regional commissioner, President William Ruto’s administration had on several occasions attempted to finish him but failed in their mission.
“If you see me here, you should know that I have sacrificed myself on behalf of my people because the government is not good. Recently, during Chebukati’s burial, I was almost finished by hired goons,” Natembeya alleged.
He went on to add, “I saw these people might finish me any time. But I want to assure you that even if I die, do not let the seed that I have planted in your hearts die.”
Despite expressing fear over his life, Natembeya maintained that he would continue criticising the government, adding that he did not fear the repercussions of his stand.
During his speech, the county chief also took a swipe at the government for allegedly failing to resolve critical issues affecting Kenyans.
Among the issues raised by the governor were the health crisis in the Social Health Authority (SHA) and the poor implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Natembeya’s sentiments followed hours after President Ruto's long-time aide, Farouk Kibet, condemned the Trans Nzoia governor for allegedly opposing the government.
Speaking in Malava constituency, Kakamega county, on Friday, March 28, Kibet accused Natembeya of politically instigating the Western Kenya region against Ruto’s administration.
"We want Malava and the larger Western Kenya to develop. Natembeya says I should not visit Malava. He is not in his right mind. How can you oppose development for our people?" Farouk said.
