The Kenya Meteorological Department has cautioned Kenyans living in various parts of the country to brace for heavy downpour for the next seven days, from Tuesday, April 8 to Monday, April 14.
Kenya Met, in its weekly advisory notice published on Tuesday, April 8, warned residents living in the Central Highlands, Western, North-western, and North-eastern Kenya to prepare for heavy downpour.
In the Central Highland regions, rains were projected in the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi. Rainfall in these counties was forecast to begin in the afternoon and extend into the night.
Counties in the Western and Rift Valley regions which include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok and Kericho were also expected to experience heavy rains.
According to the weather department, rains in the aforementioned counties were expected to occur mainly in the afternoon and would be accompanied by thunderstorms, with residents in these areas warned of potential flooding.
A similar weather pattern was projected for Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, West Pokot, Turkana, and Samburu counties, where rains were expected for the next seven days.
However, while heavy rains were expected in most parts of Kenya, the meteorological department forecasted moderate rains in Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta Counties.
Moderate rains were also expected in the coastal counties of Kenya, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as inland parts of Tana River County.
In its weekly advisory, the meteorological department also warned Kenyans living in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi to brace for very cold nights.
The weather department stated that night temperatures in these regions were expected to drop below 10°C for the first three days of the forecast period before rising slightly to 11°C.
On the flip side, the coast and the northeastern counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo were projected to experience high daytime temperatures.
According to Kenya Met, daytime temperatures in the above areas were expected to surpass the 30°C mark for most days of the forecast period.
