Chaos has erupted at the Machakos County Assembly over the impeachment of Speaker Anne Kiusya amid rumbles over a plot to impeach Governor Wavinya Ndeti. The Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) allied to Kiusya clashed with those seeking his removal from office.
The assembly is in a tiff after the Machakos County Assembly Deputy Speaker, Stephen Mwanthi, accused Kiusya of failing to account for the use of public funds.
“For the past two and a half years, she has never explained how money is spent in the Assembly. That means there are no records of any financial use. She keeps saying we should do oversight elsewhere, yet the law requires her to submit the same information every year to the Assembly.”
"That goes against the law and the Constitution of Kenya. Members here do not agree with her actions, and she should leave office,” said Mwanthi.
During the chaos, Mwanthi revealed that Matungulu MCA Lucky Nzau was injured and is receiving treatment. Others who got hurt include the Majority Leader, Nicholas Nzioka, and Deputy Speaker Mwanthi himself.
“We were in her office when she tried to force motions through, but we didn’t agree,” Mwanthi said.
Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka insisted that any motion should be discussed and agreed upon by the Business Committee.
"When Anne refused to listen today, one MCA pulled her chair in protest when he did not agree with the speakers' decision, and that’s how she fell; some of us were just self-defending.”
“You cannot replace incompetence. She should step down, and we will get someone who is competent and capable,” Nzioka explained.
This comes a day after a war of words erupted between Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and her predecessor and Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua as Wavinya grapples to stop an impeachment plot.
The bitter exchange comes as the two leaders compete for control of the vote-rich Ukambani region. On Sunday, April 6, Wavinya, who is facing a threat of impeachment from Muthwani Ward MCA Dominic Maitha, who is allied to Mutua, fired a warning to the CS, accusing him of interference.
"Mutua, you are not the governor of Machakos. Leave Machakos alone and let me run my Machakos," the governor warned.
