Former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala has been released from detention after being held for more than 10 hours at Nakuru Central and Eldama Ravine Police Stations.
Malala, who was apprehended by heavily armed police officers from the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday at 11pm, was released some minutes after 11am on Thursday.
He was arrested outside Kirobon Girls Secondary School, where Butere Girls High School students were rehearsing for the play "Echoes of War."
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Malala's cousin Harry Isiche confirmed that he was released without any charges being preferred against him.
Malala was, however, interrogated shortly at Nakuru Central Police Station before being released. It was not immediately clear why and on what subjects he was being interrogated after the dramatic arrest.
''He has been released; that is all we have at the moment. He will address the press in a few,'' Isiche said
''There are no charges that have been preferred on him. He was, however, shortly interrogated by officers from the station.''
Malala, who had earlier addressed the press while inside Nakuru Central Police Station, criticized the government and President William Ruto over what he termed as attempts to limit constitutional freedoms.
The former Senator is the scriptwriter of the controversial play Echoes of War, which has gained a lot of traction after attempts to prevent students from Butere Girls High School from performing it at the ongoing 63rd National Drama Festival in Nakuru.
On Thursday morning, Butere Girls students opted to walk out of the festivals, claiming that they could not perform due to the huge police presence at the venue.
This was after these police blocked members of the public and press from gaining access to Melvin Johns Hall Academy in Nakuru to follow the performance.
Additionally, ugly scenes were witnessed at the school after police lobbed tear gas canisters at the students who were speaking to the press after storming out of the event.
Malala claimed that 15 students from the school who were scheduled to perform at the event were unaccounted for.
