At least seven people have died, while others are nursing injuries following a road accident at the Kamandura Junction in Kiambu County along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
The accident occurred on Friday morning at around 9 am after a 14-seater matatu lost control and overturned, killing several people on the spot.
Residents who were near the scene of the accident rushed and helped in retrieving the victims from the wreckage before rushing them to Tgoni Hospital.
According to witnesses, the matatu, which was full of passengers, was en route to Kijabe in Kiambu County when it got involved in the accident.
While the exact number of those involved in the accident is yet to be confirmed, the accident resulted in a huge traffic snarl-up along the busy road, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.
Videos and images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed the matatu extensively damaged with a broken windscreen, mangled seats and deflated tyres, depicting the extent of the crash.
Moments later, traffic police officers from Limuru arrived at the scene, cordoned off the area and towed off the vehicle to ease the escalating gridlock.
The latest crash comes just hours after three people died on the same spot after a vehicle they were travelling in lost control and plunged into a ditch, leaving two other people nursing injuries.
The accident, which occurred on Thursday, April 10, involved a matatu that was speeding when it attempted to overtake another vehicle, only to lose control, killing the trio on the spot.
Footage of the scene showed firefighters from the Kiambu County Government and police officers clearing the area using water. Traffic along the highway was temporarily disrupted for several hours before emergency responders towed the vehicle away.
The two accidents came four days after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) urged drivers to be cautious, particularly during this rainy season.
In a notice issued on Monday, April 7, NTSA called on motorists to drive within the required speed limit, rest well before embarking on a journey, ensure their vehicles are well-serviced, and report cases of reckless driving.
