Heavy traffic and disruptions are to be expected on major highways due to the transportation of an abnormal load set to pass through key road sections.
According to a notice published in a local daily, the extra-wide and heavy load will traverse the country from Mombasa to Malaba, causing traffic disruptions in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Eldoret, among other areas. The cargo will be using the Nairobi-Mombasa highway before transitioning past the capital.
According to the notice, sections of Central Kenya, including Embu, Sagana, Karatina, and Nyahururu, will also be affected by the convoy.
Additionally, the Nairobi-Nakuru and Nakuru-Eldoret highways will experience disruptions as the abnormal load passes through.
The haulier began its journey on Monday morning, and the entire movement is expected to take 16 days, ending later this month.
Motorists, particularly drivers, have been urged to exercise caution while overtaking the abnormal load to prevent road carnages.
The load measures 6.1 meters in width and 25 metres in length, and the hauliers have emphasised the need for special care when overtaking it.
"All road users using this road are requested to exercise extra care and caution when in the vicinity of this convoy from 14.04.2025 to 31.10.2025," the notice added.
This is the route to be taken: Mombasa – Mariakani – Mtito – Kibwezi – Kitui – Embu – Sagana – Karatina – Nyahururu – Nakuru – Eldoret – Webuye – Malaba.
Typically, items transported as abnormal cargo include boats, planes, military equipment, choppers, and heavy steel construction metals, among others.
In previous instances where abnormal loads have been transported, they have consistently captured the attention of Kenyans and road users, with many sharing photos and updates as the loads traverse the roads.
Already, videos and images seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed sections of the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway experiencing heavy traffic, worsened by an earlier road carnage incident at Tsavo, where vehicles were left sprawled across the highway.
