President William Ruto's administration is set to sign a multi-billion-dollar agreement with the Chinese government for the construction of a state-of-the-art Foreign Affairs complex in Nairobi.
According to sources privy to the deal, the two parties are set to be sealed during President Ruto's state visit to Beijing in China, where he will meet senior Chinese government officials, including the country's President Xi Jinping.
While the exact cost of the agreement is yet to be established, Business Insider Africa projected the cost of constructing the facility to be in billions of dollars.
The deal is part of the broader strategy by the Asian nation to enhance bilateral relations and bolster its strategic cooperation with East Africa's most stable economy.
Ruto's five-day state visit to China is also aimed at enhancing trade and investment between the two countries and advancing cooperation in the fields of infrastructure.
Kenya's Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Korir Sing'Oei, while speaking during an interview in Beijing, revealed that the deal was part of several high-profile agreements set to be signed between Kenya and China.
Sing'Oei further noted that a feasibility study of the project was underway and that talks about the project were still ongoing before the official groundbreaking.
"This is a conversation we will have before the groundbreaking. At this point, the project is undergoing a feasibility study," the PS told the Chinese media.
Further, the exact location for the construction of the complex has not yet been revealed, but it is set to provide ample space and modern facilities since the current headquarters, which are located at Harambee Avenue, have outgrown the space.
Ruto departed for China on Monday, April 21, to meet Xi Jinping and unlock several new opportunities for Kenya. His departure was announced by the State House Spokesperson, Hussein Mohamed.
Hussein, in a statement yesterday, said that during Ruto's tour in Beijing, he will hold bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping to advance shared priorities in economic transformation, sustainable development, and global cooperation.
He also noted that the Head of State will officiate the Kenya-China Business Forum, which brings together over 100 companies from both countries to explore new opportunities in trade, investment, digital innovation, and industrial growth.
