Homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have made progress in probing the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Were.
He was assassinated on the evening of Wednesday, April 30, on Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout by suspected gunmen who were trailing him, with reports now indicating that he was shot four times.
Even as detectives continue to piece together the identity of the person believed to be the prime suspect behind the gruesome murder of Were, CCTV footage obtained by the police revealed the suspect.
Other than relying on the CCTV footage, the DCI officers also took into consideration witness accounts from the lawmaker's driver and bodyguard in pursuit of the killers.
Were is said to have left Parliament Buildings at around 7 p.m. in the company of his bodyguard and driver and headed to City Hall Way before joining Wabera Street.
While at Wabera Street, the legislator's bodyguard stopped the car, got out of the vehicle, and walked into a nearby M-Pesa shop, where he deposited Ksh 20,000 on behalf of his boss.
A review of the CCTV footage on Wabera Street captured a man reportedly monitoring the movement of the MP's car. The footage showed the man clad in a hood and carrying a bag.
At around 7:30 p.m., the MP and his team left Wabera Street and headed towards Kenyatta Avenue. To avoid traffic along Kenyatta Avenue, the driver changed the route and resorted to using Ralph Bunche Road.
The CCTV footage later showed Were's car on Argwings Kodhek Road before later joining Valley Road, where the MP's car stopped at traffic.
Clips obtained by the DCI officers showed the suspect, who was initially tracing the MP's car at Wabera Street, still monitoring Were's car at Valley Road.
Moments later, the man disembarked from a motorcycle and went around the car, shooting four times at close range. The first shot shattered the window, while the subsequent shots penetrated the MP's hand and chest.
Attempts by the victim's bodyguard to follow the assailants proved futile. The bodyguard then resorted to rushing the MP to the hospital, only for Were to die upon his arrival at Nairobi Hospital.
