Several people are feared dead and others severely injured after being involved in a road accident at Pivot area, Timau, along the Timau-Meru Road in Meru County.
The accident, which happened on the night of Thursday, May 1, involved a PSV matatu that collided with a pickup.
According to images and videos of the accident obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the matatu suffered severe damage, with its dashboard completely destroyed.
Its doors were also knocked out in the collision. While details are still emerging, reports indicate that some passengers were trapped in the matatu.
Local police officers joined residents as efforts to rescue those trapped continued. The exact number of casualties and injuries is yet to be confirmed.
The area has been identified as a black spot for accidents, with a similar incident at the same location claiming seven lives several months ago.
This latest tragedy comes barely a week after two people died in a fatal road crash along the Siaya-Kisumu road.
That collision involved a Kenyan Urban People Association (KUPA) truck transporting coffins and a public service vehicle (PSV) matatu.
The consistent accidents have reignited concerns over road safety in Kenya, prompting the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to launch a nationwide crackdown on traffic law offenders.
NTSA Chairman Khatib Mwashetani sent out a stern warning to motorists, revealing that their officers would be focused on apprehending vehicles that have not installed speed governors, drunk drivers, and other offenders.
Motorists have been advised to observe road safety and ensure they comply with all the rules and regulations by the Transport Ministry.
"We want to ask Kenyans to be very vigilant. For those who know they are drunkards, let us not drink and drive. Also, for those who know their vehicles lack speed governors, you should ensure your vehicles have speed governors because the team we have here will go around in a crackdown," Mwashetani advised.
